Geniaal tijdverdrijf

Bored?

THINGS YOU CAN DO WITH ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Push your eyes for interesting light show
(Amusement Potential: 1-5 minutes)
See a variety of blobs, stars and flashes. Try to make out things your subconscious is trying to send you a message? Can you control what you see by pressing different areas with different forces? Would it be possible to somehow see the same effects on TV?

See how long you can hold your breath
(Amusement Potential: 4-20 minutes)
Not that much fun, but it sure passes the time. Play with a friend, or try to beat your own personal best. Some tips: hyperventilate before hand, and stay as still as possible. My personal best is 2:00 (exactly).

Try to not think about polar bears
(Amusement Potential: 1-5 minutes)
This is especially hard, because by trying too much, you remember what you were trying to avoid thinking of. If you try too little, you end up thinking about polar bears anyway.

Scratch yourself
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
Go ahead, scratch yourself now. Even if nothing itches, go ahead. Doesn’t that feel pretty good?

Repeat the same word over and over until it loses its meaning
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
Pick a random word out of a magazine and say it aloud to yourself until it becomes a meaningless set of noises.

Hurt yourself
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
What is pain? Why is it unpleasant? There’s nothing physical about it – it’s all in your mind. Plus, after pinching yourself for awhile, boredom will seem nice next to being in pain.

Try to swallow your tongue
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
There’s not much to say about this one. It is possible.

Pretend to be a car
(Amusement Potential: 1-3 minutes)
Make appropriate revving noises in your head as you walk along and add a racing commentary as you pass strangers in the street. Use blinking eyes as indicators for extra authenticity.

Look at something for awhile, shut eyes, study after image
(Amusement Potential: 2-5 minutes)
Another great time waster. It takes about 30 seconds of staring to create an after image, and the image is then viewable for about the same length of time. Fun to combine this one with pushing on your eyes.

Get yourself as nauseated as possible
(Amusement Potential: 5-10 minutes)
Best achieved by looking straight up and spinning around. Try to be so dizzy you can’t even stand up. This is also entertaining due to the “makes boredom seem a lot better” effect (see “Hurt Yourself”).

SOG

Hi guys,
Yes, thesis attack….. well, attack…. I can only say, sometimes you get a bit bored and the SOG mode starts to show. Useless games with satisfying pops are necessary as well as liters of that black stuff named coffee. Here the useless game for all the thesis suffering people out there:

New room and thesis attack!

G’day mates!

Hows life? For those who are still on the other side of the world: way to go! Make sure you party a bit for me too
Yes, here the real life started again….. I moved into my new room, a really nice one this time! Im now one of Kaal’s inhabitants (Haarweg aka Hairyway) Promise there will be some pictures from our first BBQ outside as soon as the sun starts shining! But first there is work to be done! My last and final thesis, yes, september will be graduation time!
This time Im doing my thesis at the department of process engineering (again). Im going to research the water diffusion in different layers of different biopolymers. This water diffusion will trigger the degradation of the biopolymer with the use of microorganisms or enzymes. First I will model this and determine the research parameters and after that Im going to validate my model in the lab! Who knows what I’ll find!
anyway, if you want to know more, just let me know

thats all for now

Snow…..

Hi guys,

yes, I’m back home again…and I’m freezing my ass off here … Dropped from about 30 degrees in Sydney to about -5 degrees here in the Netherlands…. Well, suppose I have to get used to it again and cover up my nice aussie tan, too bad… Cant wait for summer to begin!
Anyway, real life is about to start again, very weird. Things to do:
- sort my stuff out (what a mess! boxes everywhere, and whats in them is a mystery, yes yes, I packed them myself about 8 months ago )
- pick up my OV (public transport card)
- arrange a room
- move to Wageningen (strong men wanted to carry my stuff upstairs!! )
- start my next thesis (work….. )
- get on the piss with friends
- more of the above
- a bit more? we’ll see how we go, no worries!

cya’ll soon!
hugs

More stories from downunder!

hi guys,
Unfortunately no pics at the moment, I’m not able to upload them here in Noosa, maybe when I’m in Brisbane…..Sorry but you have to have a little patience (and me too )

Well, lets start where the other update ended!

26/1-27/1 Hervey Bay. Here I stayed at Beaches backpackers where it seemed to be very boring at first. Then I met Brendan and his Irish friends. After a while our room filled up with a lot of people and suddenly Liesbeth appeared in front of our room! She came back and wanted to go to Fraser from Hervey Bay! Very cool! So that evening we cooked some nice food and had some beers in the bar with our Irish friends.
Next day: sleeping in, being lazy and making nice breakfast (toast with nutella yum! ) when 2 dutch guys showed up. Alex and Joost, yes Joost, friend from Jessica who met each other at their internships in Adelaide! Very cool again, more dutchies to go to Fraser with! That afternoon we formed our Fraser groups and did groceries already looking forward to the next day! Our group:
4 dutchies (Liesbeth, Joost, Alex n me), 4 swedish guys (Magnus & Magnus, Alex & David), Daniela (austrian) n Samantha (swiss).

28/1-30/1 Fraser Island experience!!!
Early up and in the 4WD to the rental agency. Here we had a briefing on Fraser and packed everything on the roof of the 4WD. This turned out to be a small competition between the irish/english team and our team, but hey, I did win from Brendan ! Our car was packed up first! Then we drove off to the ferry. Car in 4WD and off we went, into the sand!
That first day we drove to Lake Wabby, a very pretty blue lake that is slowly swallowed by an enormous sand-dune. Lots of fish in the lake, nibbling on your feet can get a little bit irritating at a certain point…. After lunch I got to drive the huge landrover with 10 people in it to Eli Creek. Very cold fresh water creek, pretty! then we went to the Maheno shipwreck and took heaps of pictures. By the time we had enough pics it was time to go to basecamp and put up the tents. So off to Cathedral resort where the campsite was, including toilets n showers ($2 for 4 mins ) and a covered cooking area! That evening we had BBQ with a huge salad n heaps of beers and whine for the girls (a little bit too much maybe for some )
Next morning everyone was hungover, but we really had to get up early to be able to still drive on the beach cause of the tides…. So we went to Indian Head and saw sharks swimming far far below in the sea! Next were the Champagne Pools……the ranger told us it was only a 5 mins walk, otherwise we would get stuck in the sand with the car, so better walk…..well, make that 45 mins!!! Crap, that was a long way, really to a bit dissapointing spot. So we drove back with another group (didnt feel like walking anymore ) and went to Lake Garrawongera! This was such a pretty lake, coloured yellowish by the tea trees and with a white beach with hardly anyone there! Great place to chill out and relax!
That evening back at basecamp it was pasta n again beers. But after watching the milkyway on the beach with the girls we decided to go to bed a little bit earlier than yesterday, maybe smart . A lot of dingo’s around the tent that night, sniffing and fighting, very interesting
Last day Straight to Lake McKenzie! Beautiful lake and well worth spending the whole last day! Together with the irish/english swimming, playing frisbee and lying in the sun! Unfortunately we had to catch the ferry, make a few last-minute pictures and return to Beaches on the mainland.
A swim in the pool and a very good shower got rid of the sand finally

31/1-today In the bus to Noosa with Joost and Liesbeth. Liesbeth went on to Brisbane and we got off the bus here in Noosa and stayed at Dolphins at Sunshine Beach. Very nice and huge waves on the beach but for the rest not much there at all. So the next day we decided to move to Koala’s backpackers a bit closer to all the shops and the city and mainbeach. That day Niels and Alistair joined us to go to the beach and hang around a bit. Today we’re not really doing anything, but thats welcome after so many adventures ! Who knows what will happen tomorrow when we take off to the Australia Zoo, yes, thats the one: Steve Irwin the Crocodile Hunter! Hope we’ll see him , at least I saw him then in stead of Rex Hunt

More for later!
